You started off managing one of the teams in the Conference, and had to try to reach the Premier league and win European competitions, either by improving your current club or by doing well enough to earn job offers elsewhere.

For each match you had to select the team, and choose a formation and a set of match tactics - intensity of tackling, height and length of passes, and shooting range could all be varied. In total there were almost 500 permutations of these options, as well as 18 basic formations.

You could sign players from other clubs, which involved making a financial offer to both club and payer and hoping that no other club offered more. Players who's contracts had expired could be signed for no club fee - so make sure all your players are under contract.

You also had to negotiate sponsorship deals, plan ground improvements, ensure that injured players got the right treatment, set up training schedules, and hire backroom staff (such as coaches and scouts).

UEFA Champions League is not just about the competition itself although naturally it's the main focus of the game. The modes on offer are UEFA Champions League, Tournament, Situation, Online, The Season and Practice. The UEFA Champions League mode allows you to either pick one of the teams who made it to the group stage of the competition or you can substitute one of the teams from another in the same country. So in effect then you could swap Liverpool for West Brom or another English team if you wanted to. Then of course the aim is to win the competition. Practice and Tournament need no explanation but Situation allows you to create a scenario and play it out. For instance you could create a match between Bayern Munich and Arsenal with the score beginning at 3-1 and then take control of Arsenal and attempt to win the match. It's not a bad mode to have but the main mode is The Season.

Featuring 73 international teams (all unlicensed, but with unique kits and an editor allows to customize each player's name and appearance) plus seven custom teams. Each team is rated out of five values in defense, attack and midfield, and players are rated in five attributes plus two variables (fitness and injury). There are several competitions at the disposal of the player, including continental cups, customized leagues and a scenario mode, inspired by several World Cup games such as the 1990 World Cup semi-finals between England and Germany or the 1974 second round match between the Netherlands and Brazil.

Between the four lines the player can choose between 6 stadiums, three weather conditions (clear, rain or snow), disabling offsides and game length. As for gameplay, the game is a typical action game of the period, with the twist of having two modifier keys for high and low balls and some keys change in effect depending on the context. A typical cross-header play goes with a player running through the flank, hitting the shoot button (holding for a tense cross with lower arc) and then connect with the ball using the "low ball" button for a finesse header or the "high ball" for a powerful header. Dead balls are played using the usual "arrow" method where the player starts by setting the height, depth and aim of the ball, then add spin as the player holds the shooting button.
